Many people don't know that the House of Hermès was born in 1837 when Thierry Hermès opened a saddle shop in Paris that specialized in hand–stitched horse harnesses. It was a business built on the strength of a stitch that can only be done by hand, the saddle stitch. In 1900, the company offered the haut à courroies bag designed especially so that riders could carry their saddles with them, and of course we all know how their line of bags developed from there! Hermès was even the first to introduce the the zipper to France!
