Ro and I went out to explore the other day, for the first time, just as this heat wave was starting. I had discovered by way of Google maps that the local library is only two-thirds of a mile north, so we decided to wander up there. What a remarkably gorgeous building. Built in the late 1800's, the whole place is a maze of delicate original tile, marble, iron, woodwork and stained glass (including an original Tiffany piece), a feast for the eyes to say the least.

A dumbwaiter! Amazing! |

All throughout the stacks, the floors are made of a translucent material to allow light to filter through. Here, you can see light coming up from underneath, and a beam below casting the shadow on the underside of the floor. |

Original floors, original shelves... |

The entire building is "fireproof", using unique and modern construction techniques for the time. |

To the left, the original Tiffany piece, which I totally did not get a very good photo of. The mix of the antique and the modern in this photo is as dreadful as it is funny. |
