the scent of rose

The roses are nearly at their best. . .

with hardly any leaf issues.

I walked out several times this weekend before. .
during. .
and after. .
the rain .
I'd ask them to remain as they are. ..
for the whole season of summer.  . .

but since they as everything else must move forward with the season . .

 . .we'll just spend every moment we can . . .
inhaling their scent.

It's almost enough . .
for me to
go to the perfume counter to ask for the scent of rose. . .
 . ..
and then. .
I think of my mom.

all for now ..

First Cuttings

Happiness is. . .
a three and a half year old enjoying a bowl of summer borscht.
Granted. . .her favorite part was the hard boiled eggs and the broth infused potatoes.

I didn't bother mentioning to her how healthy it was.
Some things should remain Grammie's secret.

all for now.  .

on the shady side

This summer I've added a shade basket to my back yard.
Early in spring there is no shade at all ..
but when the tulip tree has fully let out its leaves. .
there is an abundance of shade.

The Fuchsias.  ..
are so beautiful to me.
God's detail in each part of the flower  is truly amazing.

Little perfect airtight buds. .
that pop when you squish them.

This discovery was new to me when I had to prune off one branch that was damaged.
I stepped on a bud that still had life left.
As tempting as it is to share this delight with the grands. .
I am going to practice keeping the secret ..
lest it become a game.

all for now. .

where lupins once bloomed

It's Lupin blooming season.

This field that I wandered about last year. .
has been scraped clean. .
making way for a mall.

There are a few lingering lupins here and there. . .
I aim to go find them.

Have a wonderful weekend.

weedless wednesday

I totally missed Tilling the Soil Tuesday so I had to make up another garden name. .
and I decided to call it weedless Wednesday in the truest sense of the word.

Yesterday morning I went out to the garden with my ice cream  weed pail ..
my kneeling pad. .
and my little three pronged hand tool. .
and weeded my garden.

The clouds were gaining weight and the odd splat hit my head so I hurried up each row ..
finishing just as it began to sprinkle with more effort.

Something has it out for my pole beans.
Both nibbled and whitewashed from above.  .
I am wondering if I'll be racing to bring in my produce before it gets eaten later this summer.

Planting onion sets gives a gardener quick gratification.

Potato salad. .
Baked Potato toppings.  .
Salads and nachos. .

Yum.  There is nothing like the scent of fresh herbs on your hands.

Clearly  . .
I didn't space my leaf lettuce seeds far enough apart. .
I planted more lettuce this last week. .
and will begin to thin it out..
toss it in a bowl ..
add a sprinkle of sugar a dash of vinegar. .
and a little bit of cream.

peony restraint

Every year my pink peony gets bigger and bigger and quite frankly becomes a bit unmanageable.
I remember when it was a little plant. .
I bought the peony ring at the store and it worked. .
sort of.
Then, I resorted to using old panty hose to to tie to poles to keep it feeling lifted.
My beloved saw my efforts as rather undistinguished in the garden.

This year. .
my beloved has taken the responsibility to keep the flowers off the ground when the inevitable rain will come down just when the blossoms are fully open.

He used some heavy rebar and welded a hoop on the bars.

I love the expanding waistline feature.

Oh. .and wondering how that plant got so big.
Organic matter complimentary from the hens.
