Alright Already!

I've taken up running, which I am not particularly good at, (run for fifteen seconds, walk for fifteen minutes...) but I seem to have found my magic bullet. When I'm running around town I feel like everyone's looking at me. Which I hate, 'cause I'm a bit chubby. So I've started driving a few blocks north to Oakwood Cemetery, which is as massive as it is old as it is wooded as it is full of wildlife and beautiful views. It's always quiet there (as the dead? Hah.) And though you'll sometimes pass one other jogger or someone driving through (especially on Sundays) nine times out of ten you're totally alone. And that's what I need. Alone with Pandora on my phone and my headphones in my ears and my Vibrams on my feet. In the early mornings it's still cool, and there's thick, cold dew in the grass and having chill feet cools the rest of you down fast...

It's a good way to be.

I've got to catch up on this blog, and I have a lot coming your way, some new crafts for Craft 365, (not all of them tutorials, since I've been a bit lax on that, but I'll try and give good descriptions where I can.) I have some recipes too, and some photo adventures, so stay tuned!

What to Eat, What to Eat

Okay, I admit it. I’m a label reader. An affliction my husband didn’t know what to do with when he first met me because he, at the time, ate without discrimination. It became an obsession when I got pregnant, as I systematically began eliminating things from my diet. Artificial sweeteners, dyes, excess sodium, refined flours and sugars, high-fructose corn syrup, nitrates, nitrites, monosodium glutamate, things I couldn’t pronounce. I wouldn’t wash my hair or my body with anything that had sodium laurel sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, dye, “fragrance”, and things that sounded like a lab technician would be confused by them. I was on a rampage to eat and use only things I recognized, only things Caroline (“Ma”) Ingalls could have gotten her hands on. (We’re choosing to gloss over the part where I subsisted on Ocean Water [see also HFCS & Blue 5] from Sonic for about a month or two…)

These days, anyway, it’s a lot less crazy with me. While I don’t like consuming any of the aforementioned, I still do. Soda often the worst culprit of all. I always swore I’d protect my daughter from foods that weren’t food, from edible science and the chemicals claiming to enrich our lives. I wanted honest food. Food that went into the ground (or the barn) by someone’s hand, was treated simply and kindly, and came back out by someone’s hand, to my plate. Easy, right?

No. Not easy at all. She gets lollipops from the doctor’s office, donuts and candies from well-meaning grandparents, offered sports drinks and soda which she happily consumes, ice creams that come in unnatural shades, the sugary peanut butter her father prefers, and bread that would be better off identified as cake.

It’s up to us as parents to find the happy medium. I have friends who have children who have never eaten anything I’ve yet mentioned and subsist solely on organic produce, local eggs and milk, and grass fed meats. I envy those kids. Their moms treat them well, and if I had someone cooking me all that stuff every day, I’d eat it, too. I consider myself blessed that my daughter loves fruit and vegetables, loves sushi, almond milk and, yeah, local eggs, too. It took her almost three years to even like meat, and she’s still a little iffy about it. My girl eats pretty well, I’m going to admit. And those nights when all she wants are French fries aren’t going to get me worried. It’ll be broccoli tomorrow.

MomTip:  If your kids won’t fall for it, and all you can get them to eat is the macaroni and cheese from the blue box, check out Jessica Seinfeld’s cookbook Deceptively Delicious, it’s filled with clever and sneaky ways to hide vegetables in foods your children already adore.

The Organic Argument, Again

I have a friend who- Scratch that, I have several friends who just don't get why Organic is better. And that's fine, most people don't really see the worth of spending all that money on something that tastes the same. Normally yeah, I agree, it tastes the same, the Organic oats are just as oaty as the Quaker stuff, the Organic sugar is just as sugary, it's basically all the same- flavor wise. But my argument for Organic dairy is ferocious.

It isn't just the lack of hormones floating around, giving girls early periods leading to breast cancer, or any other estrogen-related malady the press can come up with. (And, if you have a daughter, you might want to look into that.) It isn't just the lack of antibiotics from infected, red, raw and over-milked udders, (but yeah, that's kind of nasty, too, I admit. And having been a nursing mother, I can totally, and literally feel those cows' pain.)

You can taste it. I promise. You can practically taste the grass. The grass! I swear I'm not pulling your leg. And this was the thing I had to convince this one particular friend of. We were chatting online and I mentioned my new French press. I told him that if there's one thing I'm a snob about, it's Organic dairy. Especially for someone who actually enjoys a glass of milk with things like cookies, or a wad of butter slathered on freshly baked bread.

The way Organic dairy transforms your health is going to be one thing, of course, but if I promised you it would transform the way your food tastes, too- would you believe me? Making the Organic argument is a bit like coming out of the hippie-closet for most people who have to convince their friends and family that what they're doing is better for them. But when the difference can be tasted in that first perfectly creamy, fresh sip, that's proof, right?

I challenge you to think of the health of your daughters, I challenge you to think of your own health, but above all else, I challenge you to think of your tastebuds, your morning coffee, your kids' cereal. Next time you're at the grocery store, spend a little more on the Organic and see what it does for you. You might be surprised.

Nearly three out of 10 pediatric specialists have prescribed psychotropic medication to preschoolers

Nearly three out of 10 pediatric specialists have prescribed psychotropic medication to preschoolers

Nearly three out of 10 pediatric specialists have prescribed psychotropic medication to preschoolers with developmental disorders such as autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, according to a health ministry survey.

Conducted last fall by a ministry research group, the survey also found that more than half of the doctors who responded have prescribed drugs such as tranquilizers and sleeping pills to children up to second grade in elementary school.

It was the first such survey on prescribing such drugs to children.

Eiji Nakagawa, head of pediatric neurology at the National Center Hospital of the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry in Kodaira, Tokyo, warned of the need to examine the long-term effects of psychotropic medication on children.

"The potential impact on patients' minds and physical growth arising from the continued use of such medication from an early age has not been examined, although some medication has a direct impact on neurotransmitters and hormonal secretion," said Nakagawa, who conducted the poll.

Noting that inexperienced doctors may prescribe such medication, Nakagawa said clinical guidelines need to be established by swiftly examining the safety of such medication for children in cooperation with pharmaceutical firms.

The survey of 1,155 pediatric neurologists and doctors certified by the Japanese Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry received responses from 618.

Of the respondents, 175 doctors, or 28 percent, said they had prescribed psychotropic medication to preschoolers, while 339, or 55 percent, said they had done so for children up to the second grade.

When including children up to high school age, 451 of the respondents, or 73 percent, said they had prescribed such drugs.

Such medication was prescribed to address sleeping disorders, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, self-injury and harm to others.

The medication prescribed included risperidone, methylphenidate and sleeping pills.

With healthier lives, Shanghai residents live longer

With healthier lives, Shanghai residents live longer
The life span of Shanghai residents has surpassed 82 years, the longest in the country, the municipality's health authorities have revealed.

By the end of 2010, the average life span of the city's residents was 82.13 years, eclipsing the figure of 81.73 set in 2009, according to the annual report released by the municipal health bureau on Thursday.

The average life span of the city's registered male residents was 79.82 years, up from the previous year's 79.42, while the female life span was 84.44 years, up from 84.06.

The average life span of a Shanghai resident in 1951 was 44 years.

The maternal mortality rate last year was 9.61 in every 100,000, while the infant death rate was 5.97 in every 1,000.

Life span, and maternal and infant mortality rates are the three data that reflect the health of residents and the quality of medical care of a nation or a region.

The comprehensive statistics in the report showed that the city's standard of medical care and the health of its residents have continued to improve over the past year.

"Currently, all the three data in Shanghai are at the same level with those in developed countries," said Xu Jianguang, director of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau.

Xu said that this great achievement in healthcare was due to the city's increasingly improved health services.

The health authorities also successfully completed the health and medical work for last year's World Expo.

During the six-month international event there were no serious health accidents, such as an outbreak of infectious disease, no problems with the safety of drinking water and no incidents of food poisoning.

Statistics showed that medical service stations in the Expo garden received 97,501 patients, of whom 3,530 were transferred to the city's designated hospitals.

In addition, Shanghai continued to improve its efforts in the new round of healthcare reform. More top-quality hospitals are being established on the city's outskirts to increase high-quality medical resources. These new hospitals are expected to be completed in 2013, the bureau said.

Last year, Shanghai launched a standardized training program for resident doctors.

After graduating from medical school students must do one to three years of residency training before they can formally enter a local hospital to become a clinical medical doctor. In 2010 the city enrolled 1841 resident doctors.

The city was also exploring ways of expanding and improving its family doctor system. At present, Shanghai has more than 10,000 family doctors for a population close to 23 million.

Under the plan every family will receive care from a family doctor who will be able to offer more than just home visits. The doctors will also be able to organize and provide patient information for remote online consultations with experts.

How to Lose Fat From Legs For Women

How to Lose Fat From Legs For Women
Excessive fat on the legs is one of the most common complaints that you will hear from women trying to lose weight. This article will show you how to lose fat from legs.

The one thing that you need to keep in mind is that leg fat is the same as fat on any other part of the body. The only difference is that most women tend to accumulate fat more naturally on their thighs, hips, and buttocks. So the chances are if you are trying to shed those pounds, you have probably lost some fat off your legs, but because there is more of it, the fat loss is less noticeable when you compare it to other areas of the body.

You may currently feel that no matter what you do, nothing seems to work. You may have tried various thigh toning exercises in your leg workouts, all to no avail. However the real key to losing fat from legs involves a number of components, get these right, and you will get results.

I am not talking about touching your toes, doing stretches for your legs, or anything like that. I am talking about exercises which are going get you out of breath, and cause a burning sensation in your legs.

Your legs are the biggest muscles in your body, and this means that your body has to use a lot more calories when you exercise them.

So you need to focus on exercising then using methods like jogging, riding an exercise bike, using a treadmill, a stepper, and anything else which involves a greater use of the legs.

Now you may think that you have tried all that but it has not helped you to lose leg fat. It is not only important that you do these exercises, the real key is how you do these exercises. The next couple of tips are extremely important for losing thigh fat successfully.

First of all the timing of your exercise is very important. Try to do your leg workout as early as you can. You have probably heard of this method, but this is how it really works.

Your body uses carbohydrates for energy as it is the easiest fuel for it to convert to energy. When you exercise early, your carbohydrate levels become depleted, meaning that your body has less carbs to use as energy.

The Carbs that you will eat eat after your workout cannot be stored or used as energy straight away by your body. It takes your body 24 hours to convert the carbohydrates that you eat into glycogen, which is the fuel it uses to give your body energy.

Scientific tests have proven that once your carbs have been depleted, your body needs to start using fat as an energy source. What this means is that after you have done your leg training in the morning, for the rest of the day your body will use fat to power your body.

Essentially meaning that any activity that you do during the day is going to burn fat. So a great method for burning more calories from fat is to do your morning leg training to deplete the carbs, and do another workout later on in the day. The second workout will be using fat as an energy source as there is very little carbohydrates left in the body.
This method has been scientifically proven to work, and if you didn't know how lose fat from legs before, you do now. All you have to do is to stick to it for a while.

Comfort food doesn't have to mean meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

In fact, research reveals that there are healthier staples that can soothe your soul and get you grinning. Incorporate these eight expert picks into your daily diet and you'll score more energy, less stress and even a brighter smile.

Consider these your new happy meals!

1. Salmon

"The omega-3s found in salmon have been proven to boost mood," says Lauren Slayton, a registered dietitian and the director of FoodTrainers, a nutrition center in New York City. These healthy fats not only put a smile on your face, but they can also help keep it there: A recent study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that people who consistently consumed more omega-3s were 30 percent less likely to develop gum disease than those who got less. Don't like seafood? Reach for other sources like flax and walnuts.

2. Avocado

Even if you're not a guacamole fan, this green fruit can bring you happiness. "Avocados contain serotonin, a type of feel-good neurotransmitter in the brain," says Slayton. Try using a few slices as a creamy substitute for mayo in sandwiches, or toss some cubes into your lunchtime salad.

3. Raisins

Although they're known as nature's candy, raisins are one sweet treat that won't cause cavities. In fact, researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry found that the healthy antioxidants in raisins helped slow the growth of two types of bacteria that set the stage for tooth decay and gum disease. Snack on a handful for an instant hit of energy.

4. Dark chocolate

It's no wonder that many women consider chocolate comfort food. "Chocolate is high in magnesium, a mineral that calms muscles and can relieve anxiety," says Slayton. For an even bigger dose of the mineral, try satisfying your sweet tooth with chocolate-covered almonds.

5. Cereal

The next time you pick up a box, check to make sure it's fortified with vitamin D. Over 60 percent of Americans don't get enough of this "sunshine" nutrient, which has been shown to fend off the blues -- especially during the dark days of winter. Pair those puffs of flakes with low-fat milk for a dose of bone- and teeth-fortifying calcium.

6. Green tea

Feeling stressed? Brew some soothing tea. These green leaves contain L-theanine, an antioxidant that has been linked with relaxation. Sip a mug before that big meeting, and you'll score another benefit: fresher breath. According to research from Pace University in New York City, green tea's polyphenols can destroy bacteria that lead to bad breath and tooth decay.

7. Yogurt

Scoop up a better mood with this calcium-rich snack. Yogurt contains probiotics, friendly bacteria that have been shown to ease depression. Plus, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology reveals that probiotics may reduce inflammation in the mouth, lowering your risk of gum disease and even oral cancer.

8. Popcorn

When you're grumpy or sluggish, chances are you crave bread and pasta. "That's because carbs increase serotonin levels in the body, which can put you in a better mood," explains Slayton. But before you twirl up that spaghetti, snack on some popcorn. The whole-grain treat has the same beneficial effect and, at just 31 calories per cup, won't wreck your waistline.

Lasting weight loss is an effective way of preventing type 2 diabetes in overweight adults

ilustrasi
An estimated half a million people in Finland have either been diagnosed with or are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. According to professor Aila Rissanen, these people are in an urgent need of support and care to help them prevent obesity-related illnesses. Permanent weight loss also helps to manage diabetes. Some patients have been able to stop taking medication completely.“Treating type 2 diabetes is easy at first, but the complications that may occur later are more difficult. A patient may later face an organ transplant or amputation, for example,” Rissanen warns.According to The Finnish Medial Society Duodecim, a permanent weight loss of even just five per cent is beneficial to the health of an overweight adult. The most harmful type of body fat is located in the abdominal cavity and the liver. When a person starts losing weight, this harmful fat is the first to start decreasing.

Exercise alone does not do the trick

The most efficient way to lose weight is to start eating smaller meals or to switch to foods that contain fewer calories.

“It is important to make sure that while you receive a small amount of energy, you still get all of the vital nutrients from your diet while losing weight,” says docent Kirsi Pietiläinen.

Increasing exercise alone will help shed a few extra kilos in less than six months. The combination of exercise and a sensible diet helps you prevent regaining the kilos you’ve lost. A daily hour’s exercise or an hour and a half of brisk walking is recommended.

One in five working-age Finns is overweight

• More than two million working-age Finns are overweight, meaning that their BMI is above 25.

• One in five working-age Finns is obese, which amounts to 650,000 people. This means that their BMI is above 30; for example, a person may be 170 cm tall and weigh at least 87 kilos.

• The number of severely obese Finns is 170,000. Severe obesity means that a person’s BMI is above 35.

• The number of people suffering from morbid obesity, meaning that their BMI is above 40, is 50,000.

Exercising is especially important to improving the health of overweight people. It eases blood pressure, as well as sugar and fat metabolism disorders.

From dieting to permanent lifestyle changes

According to the recently published Duodecim Current Care guideline, the primary treatment for adult obesity is lifestyle guidance, preferably conducted in groups. This guidance can be supported with medication. Morbid obesity can also be treated with surgery.

“We should ban the word ‘diet’. Maintaining the new weight can be achieved if a person takes conscious measures to change their way of life for good. It really is a project in life management,” describes Rissanen.

In Finland, obesity is most common among women of pension age and middle-aged men. It has been linked to depression, dementia, some forms of cancer, arthrosis, urinary incontinence and heart disease, among other disorders.
